The Stadler Line

Since Maple Avenue.

A family that has handed down the clippers, the razor and a little wooden race car, one generation to the next. Alex Stadler puts the family's combined barbering at closing in on 100 years.

Age 19

Art picks up the clippers

Art Stadler's own barber told him to get his license and come to work. He did, and later earned his license to teach barbering too.

1978

1919 Maple Ave

Art moves into a little 1925 barbershop building on Maple Avenue. In time it gets a wooden race car for the kids, and Art and John make house calls for disabled customers at no extra charge.

Generation two

John takes the chair

John learns the trade beside his dad, graduates barber school and goes on to open his own shop. More than 30 years behind the chair and counting.

78 W Honey Creek Pkwy

A big, bright shop by Honey Creek Mall, with a free lot out front, vintage chairs, antique razors and the race car still parked by the kids' corner.

Generation three

The next generation

John's son Austin has been cutting alongside his dad for about ten years. Grandfather and father built it, and the third generation is already behind the chair.

Are you ready?Painted on the car

For the little ones

First cut? Hop in.

The red, white and blue wooden race car has a barber pole on the hood and "Are You Ready?" lettered on the side. It was already giving kids a ride in Art's shop, and it still sits by the kids' corner today.

A nervous first haircut turns into a race. That is the whole idea.

"He gives him a perfect 1950's cut every time and he loves the race car chair!"

The straight razor

Art's three rules.

Hot towel, lather, a sharp blade and a steady thumb. The old-school straight razor shave few barbers still offer, done the way Art taught it.

  1. 1

    You don't cut the guy.

  2. 2

Keep the skin tight. Stretch it with your thumb.

  3. 3

    Have a sharp razor.
