Swap the filter
A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons a furnace runs hot and shuts itself off. Check it monthly in heating season.

Check the thermostat
Set it to Heat, raise it a few degrees and replace weak batteries. A blank screen often means batteries or a tripped breaker.

Clear the vents
Keep supply and return vents free of rugs and furniture, and keep the area around the furnace clear of storage.

My furnace stopped. What can I check first?
Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat with fresh batteries, check the furnace breaker or switch, and look at the filter. If you smell gas, don't touch switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
